Have you ever paid a visit to San Francisco? If you do so, you will find they use Muni as their public transit system in the street. When I visited Hakodate, I found more beautiful electric trolley buses run in the city.
The historic streetcar system was original owned by electric power company in the major city of Hokkaido in 1913, Muni has been taking the people of Hot Spring River (A place in HAKODATE) where they want to go since 1943. The running distance of the first trolley bus is 5.83Km. The existing railroad was built in the historic road which was opened during the age of horse-and-buggy in 1897.
函館市における路面電車の歴史は、明治30年(1897年)に、北海道で初めて走った馬車鉄道が始まりでした。大正2年(1913年)には北海道で最初の路面電車が誕生し、東雲町～湯の川間(5.83Km)で運行を開始しました。昭和18年(1943年)には電力会社が経営していた路面電車が現在の市営事業に移行され、函館市交通局が誕生し市電として市民や観光客の足として親しまれてきました。
When you arrive at Hakodate JR station, please walk for two minutes and you will find the city bus station. There is a traveler info center providing the city tour information and sale some travel package. Just buy a "1-day Pass" ticket for Bus & Streetcar and you will have a lot of fun during your stay.
函館へお越しの際は、ぜひ市電をご利用ください。
Of course, you can take JR train back to Sapporo. Sometime, you will meet the kids who are learning the history with a short trip. Don't be shy. Just wave your hand and say hello to them. I'm sure you will get a kindly response from them.
